Baton Rouge, LA. , Prosecutors say an LSU student has been arrested after making online threats to kill Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, who recently advocated bringing a live tiger onto the field as part of a college football game. Was done.
Landry, a Republican, helped revive the school's tradition of carrying a caged Bengal tiger into the stadium before kickoff for the first time in nearly a decade. Animal rights activists protested outside the stadium.
According to media outlets reporting, the arrest affidavit says 21-year-old Jackson Pemberton told state police investigators on Tuesday that he was joking when he posted on social media tagging the governor's account on X” “I'm going to kill you Jefflandry.”
The affidavit says Pemberton told investigators he was “disturbed by the Governor's decision regarding the live tiger brought onto the LSU football field last weekend.”
Pemberton, of Baton Rouge, was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Jail on a charge of threatening a public officer, media outlets reported. Jail records did not indicate whether he had an attorney or posted bond.
In a statement Wednesday, an LSU spokesperson said the university was aware of the student's arrest.
“We take very seriously any behavior that threatens the safety of individuals or our community,” the statement said. “LSU is committed to a respectful, responsible and safe environment for all.”
