Mother Abandons New Born Child in Hospital Over Disability

In a heartbreaking turn of events, a newborn baby was abandoned at ITARC hospital in Naivasha, Nakuru County, after the mother rejected the child for being disabled.

In what usually ends as a joyous celebration with a mother excited to carry her newborn baby home, that was not the case at ITARC hospital. After giving birth and seeing that the child had some deformities, the mother immediately rejected the child and told the nurses that she didn’t want it.

The new mother reportedly refused to dress the baby in the clothes she had bought and parked them in a bag before abandoning the baby on the bed.

“The mother looked at the baby and rejected it when she saw the abnormalities, she even took the baby’s clothes and packed them before leaving,” one of the hospital’s staff revealed.

According to medical staff, the father of the child who was not around sent a representative but they too, after seeing how the child looked, abandoned it and said they didn’t want it.

Contrary to what doctors term as a complete child, the newborn had a deformed skull with an empty forehead. Further, the child missed the nose with only the nostrils on the face, and the child’s eyes were also set way below the forehead right above the mouth.

Also, the newborn lacked a few toes and fingers on the foot and hands.

According to the staff, the mother said that it was better for the child to die than for her to take it home.

ITARC Hospital, as a result, has begun the process of transferring the child for reconstructive plastic surgery and help regain their physical appearance.

The doctors, who have been feeding and clothing the child, named her baby Tayan, a Maasai-origin name

The hospital is, therefore, appealing to Kenyans of goodwill to support them in correcting the deformity and then adopt the child and offer a home for her.

The hospital operations manager James Kabuki said that they had managed to get an expert at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) for the corrective surgery.
