Following challenges faced by Kenyans in accessing the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) services, Parliament has announced plans to summon senior management from the Social Health Authority (SHA) to address concerns and answer questions.
The announcement comes in the wake of a recent uproar involving Grace Mulei, a 61-year-old who disrupted a Ministry of Health media address at Afya House in Nairobi, leading to her arrest.
According to National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, SHA boss Mohamed Abdi will be required to appear before the National Assembly during its mid-term retreat that will be held in Naivasha from January 27 to 31, 2025.
Wetangula added that Abdi will also provide an update to the lawmakers on the status of the framework’s implementation, the challenges faced, and the corrective measures being taken.

”This session will provide an opportunity for Members of Parliament to engage with Dr. Mohamed Abdi Mohamed, Chairperson of the Social Health Authority(SHA), who will provide an update on the status of the framework’s implementation, the challenges faced, and the corrective measures being taken,” Wetangula stated.
The National Assembly stated that its decision to invite the senior leadership of the SHA was prompted by growing public concerns about the quality of care provided under the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).
Kenyans have highlighted several issues, including long wait times, inadequate staffing, and substandard treatment, which have raised questions about the fund’s effectiveness in delivering quality healthcare services.
Mulei was reportedly picked by persons who identified themselves as officers attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on the evening of Thursday, January 23.
According to Grace’s son George, who spoke exclusively to Kenyans.co.ke, his mother was picked up around 4 pm at Ladnan Hospital in Pangani, where she had gone to receive treatment for her leg.
Beyond the health concerns, the lawmakers will also meet officials from the Treasury to discuss Kenya’s fiscal issues as the budget-making process gains high gear.
”The National Assembly plays a pivotal role in budget-making and the management of public finance, including but not limited to oversight of public spending and debt management,” Wetang’ula explained.
”In light of increasing budgetary needs and public demand for services, the National Treasury has been invited to present on the state of the economy and related matters.”
The Speaker added that the session will enable MPs to address any concerns raised by their constituents from time to time regarding the economic situation in the country and clarify any misinformation.
