NEMA Closes Construction Site in Kilimani After Public Pressure

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has closed down a manufacturing company in Mau Summit for failing to comply with restoration orders issued last year.

In a statement on Wednesday, February 5, NEMA revealed that the facility had been emitting harmful fumes, causing concerns for residents in the area.

“NEMA has closed down the company located at Ketigoi area, Mau Summit, Kuresoi Sub County, Nakuru County, after it failed to comply with conditions of the Environmental Restoration Order issued on August 6, 2024, followed by an inspection undertaken on January 23, 2024,” part of the statement read.

“The facility had fugitive emissions visible from various leakages at the boiler area and entire facility that caused an uproar among the neighbouring community due to the possible effects of such emissions.”

In addition to this infraction, the authority also revealed that the wood processing company had not obtained an Emissions License or put in place pollution control measures that contravened the Air Quality Regulations 2024.

As a result, the company was ordered to cease all operations immediately until all the requirements above were in order.

“The company will cease to operate until adequate measures are put in place to control emissions to the environment, undertake dispersion modeling, install Ean ffluent Treatment Plant, contain oil spillage, clean up the facility compound, and involve a licensed waste handler to dispose of all streams of waste generated by the facility.”

This order comes just a few days after another such facility was closed down in Nairobi for reportedly producing waste products harmful to both humans and the environment.

The gas manufacturing company was said to have been generating calcium hydroxide in the process of manufacturing acetylene gas as a waste product.

”The facility was said to be generating calcium hydroxide in the process of manufacturing acetylene gas as a waste product that is harmful to humans and the environment,” NEMA stated on January 28.

Despite challenging the closure in court, NEMA ultimately won when the court upheld its decision to close the facility.

A construction site of a proposed 17-floor residential building was also closed recently on January 22 in the upscale Kilimani area of Nairobi.

The closure came amid complaints from residents accusing the company of carrying out construction works at odd hours.
