Police Announce New Cadet Recruitment After Two-Year Pause

The National Police Service Commission on Thursday, January 30, flagged as fake an advertisement notifying the public of a recruitment drive for police constables.

While dismissing the advertisement, the Commission reiterated that it was the only body mandated with recruiting police officers and it was yet to formally announce an opening.

“The National Police Service Commission has noted with concern a fake advertisement circulating on social media purporting to advertise and announce the recruitment of police constables,” NPSC stated.

“We wish to categorically state that the mandate to recruit and appoint persons to serve in the National Police Service rests solely with the Commission, as provided under Article 246(3)(a) of the Constitution of Kenya. Any communication regarding police recruitment can only originate from the Commission,” the Commission added.

The Commission, however, noted that plans were underway to conduct a recruitment drive advising Kenyans to stay vigilant so as not to fall victim to recruitment scams.

“The Commission is currently engaging with key stakeholders in preparation for a legitimate recruitment process, in line with its constitutional mandate. We urge members of the public to exercise vigilance and refrain from engaging with fraudulent advertisements, which are designed to mislead and exploit unsuspecting individuals,” NSPC stated.

NSPC further added that an official announcement regarding the next police constable recruitment exercise through established and credible communication channels.

The recruitment comes at a time when Kenya grapples to meet the United Nations recommended police-to-civilian ratio of 1:450. The 2024 economic survey indicated that the service had 102,209 in 2023, which translated to a ratio of 1:479.

The message by NPSC came weeks after plans to commence a police recruitment drive were revealed by Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo after a two-year hiatus.

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo made this revelation on Friday, January 11, while speaking to NTV, stating that the recruitment drive would happen in the second half of 2025.

Omollo noted that this move was in line with the recommendations of the National Taskforce on Police Reforms led by Chief Justice Emeritus David Maraga.

The recruitment of the officers, which was cut short two years ago over budgetary constraints, is aimed at improving service delivery in President William Ruto’s administration.
