Nyandarua Senator John Methu Tells Ruto to Resign

Nyandarua Senator John Methu has demanded President William Ruto resign over the rise in abductions in what is quickly becoming sinking sand for the Head of State. The Senator joins the opposition that has also demanded the president resign.

In a strongly worded statement shared with Kenyans.co.ke, the senator allied to the former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has become the first to break ranks against Ruto.

“President Ruto has lost the moral authority and character, has shaken our very Christian foundations, has lost the presidential stature and allure, and has also failed the leadership and integrity test for his continuous breach of our constitution and must therefore immediately resign from office,” Ruto stated.

Methu is a member of President Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA), which has begun to show signs of cracks since the ouster of Gachagua in October last year. This is, however, the first time a member of the party has directly asked the party leader to resign.

According to Methu, President Ruto can no longer assure the country there is no secret force being used in the abductions. Methu based his calls on the revelations made by Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi, who revealed that Ruto’s intervention led to the release of his son, Leslie, who was abducted last year.

According to Muturi, his efforts to find his son led him to discover that he was taken by the National Intelligence Service (NIS) during anti-government protests in 2024. Muturi claimed that President Ruto called NIS Director-General Noordin Haji, and one hour later his son was set free.

Muturi said before heading to State House, he reached Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo to assist him in finding his son. According to him, they all did not know of his whereabouts.

“The revelation that the then CS Interior Hon Kithure Kindiki, PS Interior Raymond Omollo, and A.T.P.U. Director were clueless about the abduction, which is a clear indictment that President William Ruto has an abduction squad outside the Constitution and the parameters of our law enforcement,” stated Methu.

The Head of State, who for a long time denied the abductions, acknowledged them late last year, going ahead to state, “We are going to stop the abductions so that our youth can live peacefully.”

During his New Year’s speech on December 31, he acknowledged “instances of excessive and extrajudicial actions by members of the security service,” sparking growing calls for accountability.

However, no one has been arrested in connection with the spate of abductions. A court case seeking to establish who is behind the abductions is still ongoing.
