The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party chairperson Gladys Wanga has flagged as fake a letter bearing her signature sent to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Taking to social media on Sunday, Wanga accompanied the fake letter with a message to Kenyans stating, “This is fake. Beware of disinformation.”
In the fake letter dated January 23, the party chair reportedly requested the intervention of DCI following Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi’s remarks in a video clip on January 20.
“In this video, Hon. Sudi insinuates that the Former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, allegedly discussed, during a meeting at Serena Hotel, a plan to “eliminate” Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga as a means of ending the Maandamano protests,” part of the fake letter read.
Homabay governor Gladys Wanga at an event on Wednesday, August 31, 2022.
“The gravity of these claims cannot be overstated. The suggestion that the Deputy President may have been involved in the orchestration of an assassination plot against a leading opposition figure is an extremely serious matter, not only threatening the safety of Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga but also undermining the very fabric of our democracy.”
As a result of these damning remarks, the letter urged the DCI to launch an investigation by summoning Sudi to the headquarters to substantiate their legitimacy and acquire any evidence on the same.
Sudi’s video elicited several reactions on social media with his most damning allegation being that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua had suggested a ‘dangerous’ plan to end the opposition maandamanos in 2023.
Prompted by Gachagua’s sentiment that President William Ruto preapproved all speeches made by his allies, Sudi took to social media, recording an impassioned attack against the former DP.
He called Gachagua a liar who had switched upon impeachment to gain sympathy and support from Kenyans and insisted that the President had stopped him from carrying out several plans to silence heavyweights like then-opposition leader Raila Odinga.
“You know what you wanted to do during the opposition protest. If we were not clever and stopped you we would not have a country right now. You know what you were pushing for in Serena. Please stay at home. That’s where you are supposed to be because you are a very dangerous man,” Sudi claimed.
He also named former President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i as some of the people Gachagua allegedly targeted.
“My brothers from the Mountain, I want to tell you that this man is a big liar. If we had allowed him, he would have done much worse. He wanted to hurt the Uhuru family, the Matiang’i family, and all the PSs who were giving us trouble,” Sudi alleged.
“Who planned the theft of Uhuru’s sheep? Who sent goons to Uhuru’s son’s gate? You planned all those incidents yet today you are speaking as if you are a clean man. You are a big liar. You know what you did in the short time you were in office.”
