Oscar Sudi Details Voting Process That Led to Selection of Gachagua as Ruto's Running Mate

Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi has once again launched a scathing attack on former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over the remarks he made when meeting opposition leaders on Monday.

In a self-recorded video on Wednesday evening, Sudi debunked Gachagua’s claim that he had helped President William Ruto ascend to power due to his popularity in the Mount Kenya Region.

Sudi relayed that there were several other Mount Kenya politicians with the capacity to serve in the second-in-command position, adding that Gachagua was one of the least preferred of them when the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) held a vote prior to choosing Ruto’s running mate.

“You are saying that you convened people in your home to strategise on Ruto’s Presidency, but you were only given the opportunity to serve as running mate just three months before the elections. We had already planned all these issues,” Sudi stated.

“Let me remind you that besides you there were; Ndindi Nyoro, Kimani Ichung’wah, Moses Kuria, William Kabogo, Ann Waiguru, Cecily Mbarire, Kithure Kindiki and even Mithika Linturi, who were considered in equal measure to occupy that position. You know what happened when we came down to vote.”

According to Sudi, the voting took about 20 hours of deliberation, during which Gachagua repeatedly lost, gathering only 4 votes in each round.

Despite this, President Ruto insisted on proceeding with Gachagua, who has now turned against him following impeachment.

“They voted in the first round, and you got four votes. Then a second and third time, where you got the same number of votes. They were all supporting Kindiki, but the only person who stood by you was William Samoei Ruto,” Sudi claimed.

“When we left at 3 am, they were frustrated and asked the President to decide since they did not want you. He decided to announce you as his running mate. How are you saying that you helped when you were equal to all these people?”

The die-hard Ruto ally further faulted Gachagua for participating in dealings that ultimately led to his impeachment barely two years into office. According to Sudi, Gachagua would engage in these activities when the President was out of the country.

Among the scandals he claimed the former DP orchestrated was the release of contaminated sugar without Ruto’s consent. For this, Sudi revealed that Gachagua was given a warning.

He claimed that this did not faze Gachagua, who then called the Health Principal Secretary and urged him to change the mosquito nets tender. This reportedly led to the PS and other employees being fired.

This was listed during the impeachment motion as one of the main reasons for the schemes he was reportedly involved in during his tenure.

Since his impeachment, Gachagua has gone on the attack, constantly listing corruption schemes that the President was involved in.

In his Monday address at the launch of new offices for the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K), Gachagua claimed that he was booted out of office for failing to defend government projects like the Adani deal and the Affordable Housing Programme because of their fraudulent nature.
