Police Bust Southern Bypass Carjacking Ring in Dramatic Raid

The police, in collaboration with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), arrested one suspect believed to be part of a carjacking ring that has been stealing from motorists along Nairobi’s Southern Bypass on Friday, January 3.

The arrest is in response to a string of robbery incidents against motorists along the route that spiked during the holiday season.

This sting operation was spearheaded by the Regional Criminal Investigations Officer, along with sleuths from Lang’ata and Dagoretti Police Stations, who put up patrol activities in the area.

As a result, the coordinated effort led to the swift arrest of a suspect who brazenly attempted to rob unsuspecting drivers on Thursday, January 2, along this stretch of road connecting Ole Sereni to Kikuyu.

There has been uproar from road users of the Southern Bypass over an alarming increase in cases of mugging on the road, more so in the evenings.

According to the DCI, the suspect used a huge stone to cause accidents before mugging motorists. He would place a stone in the middle of the road, then lay in waiting for the car to stop, where he would emerge armed with brute weapons and forcefully steal motorists’ valuables.

“The suspect’s strategy involved positioning a massive stone to obstruct traffic, creating the perfect opportunity to launch his assault,” DCI explained.

In this particular incident, officers on patrol were alerted by a loud crash, which prompted action on their part. Upon rushing to the scene, police officers discovered that a car had collided with the stone as it drove towards Ngong Road.

Passengers inside the vehicle recounted the terrifying ordeal after hitting the stone of what was supposedly an ‘accident’.

It is reported that the suspect emerged from a nearby thicket, where he immediately confronted them, stripping them of their valuables before vanishing.

Acting quickly, the patrolling officers pursued the fleeing suspect into the nearby thicket, which led to his arrest.

The suspect is currently in police custody for further processing awaiting to be arraigned in court on Monday, January 6, 2025.
