Police in Likoni Launch Probe After Woman’s Remains Found Chopped & Stuffed in Sacks

Grief and intrigue have surrounded the residents of Likoni after a woman’s dismembered body was found on the morning of Saturday, February 8.

The woman’s body, believed to be the victim of a gruesome killing, was found chopped into pieces with her remains stuffed into two sacks, with some body parts missing.

The discovery comes as Likoni residents grapple with rising insecurity and at a time when the rate of femicide is particularly high in the country.

It is unclear who was behind the gruesome murder and the circumstances surrounding the woman’s demise.

Area residents, led by Likoni Member of Parliament Mishi Mboko, hit out at security agencies, castigating them for failing to ensure the safety of women in the area.

“We have been having meetings with security agencies about insecurity in our region, about machete-wielding gangs. But today, something bad has happened. Enough is enough. We are tired of hearing people have been stabbed, and today we have seen a woman chopped up in pieces,” Mboko lamented.

“To the security agencies, what are you missing? Or what is happening such that we women do not feel safe anymore? Can you give us surety that women of this country are going to be safe?” she posited.

In the same breadth, the Kenya Women’s Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) condemned the murder, calling for urgent action by the relevant authorities to discover the guilty parties.

“We are deeply saddened by the discovery of a dismembered body believed to be that of a woman found in sacks in Approved Estate, Likoni, Mombasa, today. KEWOPA strongly condemns such acts of violence and calls for swift investigations to bring the perpetrators to justice,” KEWOPA stated.

Despite commitments by President William Ruto’s government, cases of femicide are still prevalent in the country. Various bodies, such as the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), KEWOPA, and the Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA-K), have called on the government and state agencies to tackle the vice of femicide in the country.

According to the African Data Hub, over 500 women were victims of femicide in Kenya between January 2016 and December 2023, highlighting the severity of the situation. Within August, September, and October 2024, the Deputy Police Inspector General of Police revealed that 97 women were victims of femicide.

In January 2025, Ruto appointed a 42-member Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) to fight the rising gender-based violence and femicide. 

According to a Gazette Notice, the Head of State tapped Dr Nancy Baraza to head the committee. Ruto also appointed the Law Society of Kenya President Faith Odhiambo and crime and investigative journalist Franklin Wallah as members.

Others include Linah Jebii Kilimo, who served as the MP for Marakwet East and held the position of Assistant Minister in the Ministry of Cooperative Development and Marketing, and Dr Sam Thenya, the founder of the Nairobi Women’s Hospital. 

The Committee was tasked with the responsibilities of assessing, reviewing, and recommending measures to strengthen the institutional, legal, and policy response to GBV and femicide in the country.

The group will focus on identifying trends, strengthening legal frameworks, and proposing actionable measures to combat the pervasive issue.
