Residents of Kirinyaga County have been encouraged to continue registering for the Social Health Authority (SHA) to access improved healthcare services.
The call was made by Kirinyaga County Commissioner Hussein Allasow during a memorial event marking the first anniversary of the tragic deaths of 23 people due to illicit brew consumption in Kangai area last year.
Speaking at the event Tuesday, the county commissioner emphasised the importance of SHA, stating that it is a crucial step toward ensuring that all citizens receive proper medical care in hospitals.
He urged locals to take advantage of the new system, which replaces the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), noting that SHA offers better healthcare opportunities and benefits.
“We understand that there have been some challenges in the registration process, but I want to assure you that the government is actively working on resolving them. The system will be streamlined, and soon, everything will function smoothly,” said Allasow.
He further explained that SHA would not only benefit those already seeking medical services but also assist the less privileged in the county who may struggle to afford healthcare.
According to the commissioner, SHA is one of the government’s key initiatives to improve the well-being of citizens, alongside other social support programmes such as Inua Jamii and financial aid for the elderly.
Allasow called upon community leaders and local administrators to help in sensitising residents about the new insurance scheme, ensuring that more people enroll and benefit from the programme.
He noted that the government remains committed to providing better healthcare services for all Kenyans, particularly vulnerable groups who have previously struggled to access medical care.

In addition, Mr Allasow challenged the youths to enroll into Technical and Vocational Colleges to gain skills and knowledge and be able to start their own business, noting the ongoing labour export through Kazi Majuu initiative requires youths with training in various sectors.
He highlighted the ICT hubs as the basis of self-employment as the government has provided internet and computers.
The memorial event, held in honour of the victims, served as a solemn reminder of the dangers of illicit brew, alcohol consumption.
Community members expressed their gratitude for the government’s intervention and support in addressing issues from the community level.
