Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Sunday reunited with his former Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe at the latter’s daughter’s traditional wedding in Nairobi.
The unexpected reunion saw the two who were once at the helm of Nairobi City County come together, bringing alive their bitter-sweet work relations.
Taking to his official X handle, Sonko expressed his excitement about meeting his former second-in-command.
“Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending a vibrant ruracio (dowry payment) ceremony for Luios Muthengi Kimanzi and Matilda Igathe at Runda Estate,” he shared.

The flashy wedding was between Igathe’s daughter Matilda who was tying the knot with her bridegroom Muthengi.
“I extended my best wishes to them for good health and a joyful family life,” Sonko added.
In the video of their meeting which was shared online, the two seemed to have a blast reminiscing on their past work relationship.
“I thank Kimanzi (Muthengi’s father) and my brother and my former governor Sonko, for visiting my home today,” Igathe stated happily amid laughter as he received a gift of rare vintage whiskey from Sonko.
While in office, Sonko and Igathe often clashed on ideologies and trust issues which led to a bitter fall-out that ended in Igathe’s resignation barely six months after assuming the office.
On January 31, 2018, Igathe resigned from his post as Nairobi County’s Deputy Governor. His resignation was abrupt and stemmed from a reported lack of trust between him and his boss, then Governor Sonko.
In a statement following his resignation, Igathe cited that he could not work under conditions that compromised his integrity and professional conduct.
Igathe’s tenure as Deputy Governor began after he was elected in the 2017 general elections on a Jubilee Party ticket as a running mate to Mike Sonko as the second governor of Nairobi County.
Their reunion is reminiscent of what happens in politics where yesterday’s foes turn into today’s allies.
Later, Igathe vied for the Nairobi Governor position during the 2022 General election under the Azimio-One Kenya Alliance coalition and came second behind UDA’s Johnson Sakaja who won the elections.
