“Alcohol is a well-established, preventable cause of cancer that is responsible for approximately 100,000 cases of cancer and 20,000 cancer deaths per year in the United States—combined with 13,500 alcohol-related traffic crash deaths per year in the U.S. Even more so – yet most Americans are unaware of this risk,” Murthy said in a news release.

The advisory also said that more than 740,000 cancer cases globally in 2020 could be attributed to alcohol use.
