Transport was paralysed on Saturday morning along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway near the Dalamere shop after a trailer and a truck got involved in an accident.

According to reports, the accident occurred around 7am after the truck heading towards Nakuru lost control and rammed into the oncoming trailer.

Images shared online showed the trailer damaged on its front with a broken windscreen and side mirrors, while the truck was severely damaged on its side with deflated tyres.

The footage further depicted a team of rescuers believed to be area residents attempting to retrieve those trapped under the wreckage as others watched the unfolding from a distance.

The accident led to the closure of the road on both sides to allow the removal of the wreckage, with motorists plying the highway forced to find alternative routes.

Despite attempts by motorists to navigate the scene, the traffic jam persisted for several hours as the area police officers intervened to restore normalcy along the highway.

Meanwhile, reports of those killed or injured in the early morning road crash are yet to be established, with rescue efforts still underway.

The Nakuru-Naivasha stretch is considered one of the most accident-prone highways in the country, according to data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

Barely a fortnight ago, on January 13, about five people were critically injured after the matatu they were travelling in lost control and got involved in an accident along the Nakuru-Naivasha highway.

According to the rescue team from St John Hospital, the road crash took place between a truck and a matatu at the Rironi of Naivasha, leaving the five injured.

“Five were injured in a road crash between a truck and a matatu at Rironi on the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway. St John Ambulance first responders stabilized casualties on-site before evacuating them to the hospital. Stay safe on the roads,” St John Ambulance confirmed.

Today’s accident adds to the number of road carnages witnessed in the country since the year began, despite efforts by NTSA offices and the traffic police to restore sanity on major highways.
