The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has cautioned Kenyans against engaging in teaching services unless they are registered under the Teachers Service Commission Act.
TSC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Nancy Macharia, in a gazette notice dated Friday, January 24, warned that any individual found contravening the Act was liable to two years imprisonment or pay Ksh100,000 in fine or both.
Similarly, Macharia warned learning institutions against employing individuals not registered by the commission, stating that such institutions also risked similar consequences.
“A person shall not engage in the teaching service unless such a person is registered as a teacher under this Act,” the commission CEO cautioned.

The warning followed the deregistration of four teachers whose employments were terminated for allegedly breaching the TSC Act, Chapter 212 of the Constitution.
According to the commission, individuals whose TSC numbers are 695159, 46412, 303790, and 147178 ceased being teachers effective January 22, this year.
“A teacher whose name has been removed from the register shall cease to be a teacher for purposes of this Act with effect from the date of such removal,” TSC announced.
The commission further stated, “Where the name of any teacher is removed from the register under this Act, such name shall not be reinstated except by direction of the Commission.”
Meanwhile, the teacher’s code of conduct also requires them to at all times perform their duties and to conduct themselves responsibly and professionally at the place of work.
In a case where a teacher is reported to have gone against the code of conduct, the commission will immediately institute investigations either directly or through its agents.
Consequently, the teacher will be served with a letter of interdiction specifying the actual allegations made against them. Upon verification of the claims, the teacher will be interdicted promptly.
Once interdicted, the teacher or head of the institution will be required to clear with the school and leave the institution within 48 hours of receiving the letter of interdiction.
