Turkana County Deputy Governor, Dr. John Erus, met with representatives from the Ministry of Defence to discuss the allocation of land for military use in Turkana County.
The purpose of the meeting was to outline strategies for engaging local communities and resolving concerns related to the proposed military installations.
Erus emphasized the importance of public participation to ensure that the residents’ views are considered in the planning process.
“Community engagement is crucial for building trust between military authorities and the local population, whose lives may be affected by this initiative,” said Dr. Erus.
He further stressed the need for a consultative approach, stating that together with Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai Napotikan, he believes open dialogue with local leaders and residents is essential not only to secure land but also to address potential tensions.
DG Erus highlighted the importance of identifying suitable locations for military installations to avoid disrupting local communities and livelihoods.
Colonel C.U. Mundui, a Ministry of Defence representative, acknowledged the need for further consultations and pledged to refine proposals based on community feedback.
“Maintaining an open dialogue with residents will ensure that their needs are met while fulfilling national security objectives,” he said.
He also noted the potential benefits of military installations in Turkana, including improved infrastructure, job creation, and enhanced security against external threats.
Present at the meeting were Turkana County Attorney Ruth Amanikor, Deputy County Secretary Joseph Nyanga, and advisors to the Governor and Deputy Governor, Peter Lomorukai, the lead, and Brig (Rtd) Faustine Serera, Ministry of Defence, to discuss military land allocation.
