Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti on Tuesday, February 4, led the county government in installing CCTV cameras across county hospitals to curb theft of medicines and mismanagement of funds.
While overseeing the activity, Ndeti warned of dire consequences to persons caught in the act as the county aims to bring an end to the menace that has ravaged the health sector in Machakos.
“The bad behaviour of stealing medicines will soon come to an end. Some people thought they were so clever, they knew all the nooks and crannies in our hospitals, the ‘dark corners.’ I have found all the dark corners and put CCTV cameras,” Ndeti stated.
“With these cameras, the daily operations of our hospitals will run smoothly. If we lose medicines and money it becomes hard for me to promote our doctors, nurses and county workers,” she added.

Further, Ndeti mentioned that the move to install the cameras would go a long way in safeguarding the county’s medical coffers amidst the tough economic times that the country is currently in.
“As a government, we have to be very prudent as life has become hard and we must look after our money and safeguard it,” she noted.
The first-time governor cautioned persons against engaging in theft of the medicines and mismanagement of funds stating that she would go round the clock to ensure the safety of the county’s health sector.
“To the persons who are playing with the funds of Machakos county, be warned. You will be seeing me here (Machakos hospitals) almost every other day to ensure that all systems are working as expected,” Ndeti affirmed.
Ndeti’s move came after five employees of the county government were arrested last year over stealing assorted medicines valued at Ksh30,745 from a health facility in Itunduimuni health facility in Masinga.
Out of the five, four, who included a clinical officer, a nurse, a watchman and a cleaner were arraigned before a court and released on a Ksh100,000 bond.
Ndeti, who was making her address at Machakos Level 5 Hospital, announced plans to open a level 3 facility within the hospital to cater for walk-ins and free up the burden on the Level 5 hospital.
“To enhance efficiency in service delivery for the rapidly growing urban population in Machakos town, my administration will open a Level 3 facility within Machakos Level 5 Hospital to cater for walk-ins. Going forward, Machakos Level 5 will only handle referrals from our Level 4 facilities,” she expressed.
